About the Owner

Michael Castle was born with a natural creativity for cooking and design. Growing up in a large family with 6 brothers provided the perfect environment for developing his skills. At a very young age, he knew he would become a chef and open his own restaurant.
At the age of fourteen, Michael began working at the Mobil Four Star rated Potted Steer Restaurant in Osage Beach. He bussed tables at night and learned the basics of kitchen preparation during the day. Upon graduation from high school he left home to attend the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. He completed his externship at the Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri. After graduation, he moved to Lake of the Ozarks where he was Sous Chef at The Blue Heron Restaurant for three years. Michael then accepted the general manager position at The Potted Steer Restaurant, serving for seven years.
In 1995, along with his wife Cheryl, he took ownership of On the Rise Bakery. He soon built up a loyal clientele and outgrew his restaurant space. In 1998 he purchased a property only a short distance away and the new On the Rise Bakery & Woodfired Bistro was constructed. In the winter of 2011 Michael began the construction of Palate Artisanal Retail which debuted in April of 2012. This upscale retail store caters to the gourmet with focus on the hard to find culinary tools and foods from around the world.
